Outdoor Christmas
Decorations
The winter season is very special for many reasons, but
there is nothing like the Christmas time which is probably the
most popular and beloved of them all. There is something
special about Christmas, which is also referred to as Xmas, and
one sees many homes, stores and even city streets that are full
outdoor Christmas/xmas decorations. There are many ways of
decorating the outside areas with outdoor garden decorations and
also a wide variety and range of themes and objects associated
with Christmas. Although many prefer to simply purchase their
outside Christmas decorations, it is also possible to handcraft
these items. For the do-it-yourself people there are numerous
publications with Christmas decoration projects and
recommendations and also websites, many of which offer free
tips and building instructions.
Starting at the end of November or beginning of December
many homeowners start with their holiday outdoor
decorations. Once the inside decorating has been done, then
it is time to tackle the outdoor Christmas/xmas decorations. A
standard decoration for the outdoors that is used by most
everyone and which is suitable for any location are outdoor
string lights. Most commonly used are the traditional white or
colorful lights, however nowadays there are other options. One
can purchase strings of lights that are in various forms
related to this holiday season, such as presents, stars,
snowflakes or Santa Claus heads. However, outdoor
Christmas/xmas decorations are not just limited to strings of
lights anymore and the possibilities are almost endless. Very
popular are also plastic figures which are versatile and can be
used just about anywhere outdoors, but inflatable figures are
gaining on popularity. There are also other standard Christmas
decorations such as tinsel, garland or bulbs.
Plastic or inflatable figures are gaining in popularity now
and are seen more and more often on lawns, roofs, sidewalks or
balconies. This is because these items are becoming more
affordable in price and are readily available. Plastic figures
have been around for some time now, however those made today
are not only durable but they are also more elaborate and
attractive. There are, for example, reindeer pulling a sleigh
with presents and Santa which can be safely attached to the
roof or a North Pole sign for the front yard and even snowmen
that can be placed around. Large candy canes are also very
popular and are usually placed on the side of a walkway.
Plastic figures today are not like they used to be, because
many now are complete with lights and even often a motor to
provide for motion. Before purchasing such items with lights or
motion, though, it is necessary to ensure that they are
suitable for outside use since many are made especially for the
indoor area. This is because the Christmas decorations will not
be so wonderful if they cause a short circuit or break down
because of getting wet, so before something bad happens it is
best to either ask a salesperson or take the time to read the
box before actually buying something. Inflatable decorations
are not only very large and attractive, but also have the
advantage that they deflate when the season is over and this
makes them extremely easy to store away for the rest of the
year since they do not need much space. Those who prefer
plastic decorations should have enough room for storage since
they do take up a lot of space.
Outdoor Christmas/xmas decorations would not be complete
without other old standards, such as garland or bulbs. Garland
is also made for the outdoors and is generally weather
resistant, larger and longer. Garland can be used in a number
of ways, such as being wrapped around the railing of a balcony,
porch or deck. It can also be secured and used as a border of a
house, around fences or even hung decoratively from overhead
awnings. Tinsel can also be hung around balcony plants or from
outdoor trees and this gives a wonderful glowing effect that is
definitely very eye-catching. Although tinsel may look nice, it
is not for everyone or everywhere. Families with small children
or pets should avoid tinsel because it is often “test-tasted”
and can cause choking or injury.
Not all outdoor Christmas/xmas decorations have to be
purchased as finished items. There are also kits that are
inexpensive, but which have to be put together and painted
before they can be used. Another option for those with a low
budget is to actually make the outdoor decorations out of old
materials or with cheap materials that can be purchased from
home stores. The ideas for such projects along with
instructions and illustrations can be found in many
publications, such as books and magazines, as well as on many
websites.
Creating a holiday look and feel by using outdoor
Christmas/xmas decorations can be a lot of fun to do. There is
no limit on ideas and just about anything desired can be found
in stores or self-made.
